Once all website entries are completed and posted by February 27, a Selection Committee and the GVC Project Manager will select a total of 12 finalists in the Primary School and Secondary School categories using the criteria outlined below. The names of these 12 finalist teams will be announced by March 15.
For two weeks after that, the Global Virtual Classroom judges (see the list for Panel of Judges below), will evaluate the 12 websites individually and against each other based on a precise allocation of 100 points, using the following criteria...
CONTENT (30%)
To what degree does the website appeal to a worldwide audience?
- Does it have a theme?
- Does it appeal to people from different cultures? Does it reflect the schools home cultures?
- Does the content inform, entertain, explain or teach something?
PRESENTATION (30%)
How well does the website use the medium?
- Is the site easy to navigate? Is its organization clear and logical?
- Is it attractive and appealing, with good use of color, images and text?
- Does it use sound, animation or other media?
COLLABORATION (40%)
Did all of the students participate and work together?*
(20 points will be awarded by the GVC Project Manager which has access to records of communication between the students, and 20 by the judges based on the final entry.)
- Is this website one book written by three authors or three books inside one cover?
Panel of VIP Judges
The following people served as judges in 2003/04. A similar panel will be convened this year.
- Earl Gee
- Alan Giles
- Gary Godfrey
- Carol Knauff
- Ram Matta
- JoAnn Patrick-Ezzell
- Joseph Timko
Teams will be allowed to see their average scores if they wish. In May, participants will be able to view their averaged scores online in the Judging Report.
Three prize-winning teams (Grand, second and third prizes), plus runners up, honorable mentions and special merit awards will be chosen in each category. Winners will be notified by March 31 and publicly announced and acknowledged on April 19, 2004.
Please remember that although the essence of any contest is competition, we believe strongly that the main benefit of participating in Global Virtual Classroom Contest is the learning experience it can provide. Lessons about cross-cultural communication, diplomacy, collaboration and computer skills are invaluable in today's global society.
*Teams with less than three active schools will be eligible for special merit awards only.
